From Channel 5 News Nashville Tennessee...............
SPRING HILL, Tenn. – The Tennessee Health Services and Development Agency approved HCA's plans to build a new emergency hospital in Maury County. Two other hospitals were trying to block the approval. Both sides appeared in front of the state agency Wednesday morning at the Legislative Plaza in Downtown Nashville. HCA wants to build a $9 million emergency care facility on Kedron Road and Saturn Parkway. The hospital would provide ER services to the 25,000 people in Spring Hill. Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia and Williamson Medical Center in Franklin are both a 20 to 25 minute drive from Spring Hill in good traffic and weather conditions. The hospitals said they oppose the ER because it won't be equpped for serious emergencies. "The proposed facility will not have surgery, a cardiac cath lab, the on-call specialist will be available by telephone, not on site," said Dan Hall, Hospital attorney. Officials in the town have long wanted a hospital. Former Spring Hill Mayor Ray Williams, 48, died in 2005 of a heart attack. He had a 25-minute ride to the nearest ER in Columbia. Some local leaders think a closer emergency room would have made a difference. Spring Hill alderman Alan Hall also knows firsthand about the difference it would make if there were an ER in Spring Hill. Last winter, a medical emergency turned serious as he drove his pregnant wife to Franklin. "It took us 45 minutes to get through the ice and snow on the road," said Hall. Maury Regional and Williamson Medical had proposed an alternative, a 24-hour urgent care facility. Local officials said that's not good enough and want a hospital built soon. The two hospitals have 15 days to appeal the decision. _____________________________________________________________
